April Update

The big news for April is the launch of the TBRC Raffle. You will be able to purchase tickets from Club members, at various points around the islands once the tickets have arrived, and online . In the meantime you can pre-order tickets on the dedicated raffle web page: TBRC Raffle. There will be a comprehensive list of prizes and all associated information in the next day or two.

We're already half way through the month, and only 2 weeks to go until the IOS World Championships. Excitement is building as all crews are getting out on the water in preparation for our favourite regatta. The Club will be taking delivery of new Kit on the 23rd of April, (watch out! Members invoices are about to be delivered!)

The month started with a splash ,with the TBRC Pursuit Race from Nutrock to the head of Tresco quay. It was a beautiful day, with several mens and womens crews (and a mixed crew in the Emperor!) showing up for the first, albeit unconventional, race of the season. The St Marys A crews showed their mettle with fine displays of paddle power, and everyone appreciated the opportunity to stretch their muscles ahead of this weeks first set of 'Nut Rocks'...

...4 Womens crews were out on the water for the women's race yesterday evening. The rain abated in time for 7.30pm, leaving only some mist to hide St Marys harbour from the start line. In finishing order: Kathrin Rose, Emma Louise, Emperor, and Islander. Good luck to the mens crews for their first race on Friday! February must have been a quiet month...

This month sees the 6 crews starting to take shape in time for the championships, our new kit getting ready for production, our third and final Club training weekend of the off-season, and fundraising starting in earnest!

New Racing Gig

Our place with Peter Martin has been booked, and now we are seeking grants, fundraising and donations to make up the £22,000 bill we'll need to pay! Any ideas? Like to help? Let us know!

World Championships 2009

The crews are getting sorted, and everyone is training on the water. Our training gig, the Tryher, has had plenty of use! The Ladies A crew were unfortunately not allowed to use a local 32ft racing gig this year, as they have done in previous years, but good fortune came in the shape of Porthgain Rowing Club of Wales, who have very very kindly given them the use of their super duper 32ft gig, the Ralph Bird. Keep an eye out for them in it and don't forget to cheer on the 'Ralph Bird' over the championship weekend. Our other Gigs will be out there representing us in good TBRC style: The Emperor, Men A Vaur and Czar - and in the spirit of 'paying it forward' we will be lending the Men A Vaur to a visiting ladies crew who were otherwise without a gig to race in.

RACE RACE RACE

Sunday, April 5th, 12.30

Our first race: mens and womens crews, with a handicap! If your crew would like to take part please contact Alison Douglas, otherwise come along to cheer everyone on. It will finish at Tresco, where the New Inn has some lunch-time live music, part of the Isles of Scilly Folk Festival taking place that weekend.

RAFFLE

We hope to launch a raffle in early April, to span the course of the racing season. We're currently on the hunt for fabulous prizes to tempt everyone into buying LOADS of tickets. If you would like to donate a prize we will of course be VERY grateful, and would be willing to do almost anything in return! We'll give details of the raffle here as they are available, and will have them for sale online, so keep your eyes peeled.

Maintenance

There is always a price to pay for the good times (apart from subs), and that is gig maintenance. Please please please could all members spend a bit of time helping out: the wear and tear from all the fun we had last year needs to be fixed up in time for more good times this year... If you're not sure where to start ask Nick Mackey, Alison, or anyone who looks like they might know what they are doing.

We are also planning to introduce a special supporters membership for anyone who cannot take part in the rowing and day to day club activities, but would like to socialise, support, cheer us on, and get involved with the club in a more meaningful way! ROWING in the PUB

This Saturday night (17th Jan) we have a team rowing race! There will be a sweepstake, some awards, and it will be a great opportunity to get working together and generally have some winter FUN!!!! No gym pants required, just some joie de vivre...! Its open to EVERYONE; you don't need to be a gig rower to get involved. Contact Alison Douglas if you would like to join in.

NEW RACING GIG
Even in the cold depths of winter the Club is managing to keep on keeping on. Our most exciting news to report is the order we have placed with local gig builder Peter Martin for a new 32ft racing gig. This is to be launched in time for the 2010 World Championships. We are offering the chance for a lucky person to name the gig, in return for buying it for us!!!

NEW GIG SHED FUNDRAISING
Whilst we are committing ourselves to the new racing Gig, we are very much still in need of a place to house it when it arrives, and our other gigs who are currently getting a bit of a drafty winter rest. Fundraising efforts continue for the shed, which will go a long way to help us bring everything up to a high standard, ensuring we keep these wonderful pieces of island heritage in good condition for future generations.

WINTER TRAINING
After a shortish break, training has been resumed by many members of the club. We have a tailor-made gym programme available for our members to follow, and have even been seen out rowing (in a hail storm! Urgh!). Any current or prospective club members who are interested in joining in or finding out more please contact Alison Douglas.

INDOOR ROWING RACE
Club members represented us commendably at the recent 2000m indoor rowing competition on St Marys, coming away with the fastest women's time achieved on the day. Inspired by the upbeat and good-sporting competitiveness it fuelled, and because it was such a good incentive to get into the gym, we have decided to hold our own competition after the New Year. We hope this will take place in a 'local watering hole', and we will be flexing our IT prowess by projecting the race onto a big screen whilst the teams race each other over a longer distance. More details to follow after Christmas, but get training because we will make a win worth your while!

2009 MEMBERSHIP
The only way to ensure the club continues is through membership. We are a registered Community Amateur Sports Club and our membership fees are structured to try and keep it accessible to EVERYONE! The 2009 Membership fees are listed below, are due by the end of January (or on joining if later in the season), and can be paid by cheque or cash to Kim Hopkins at Fraggle Rock on Bryher, or Rachel Young at the New Inn on Tresco. A Paypal option will be available soon (link to follow, check back soon).

Both the Men-A-Vaur and Czar crews are ready to leave for Penzance on Tuesday 26th August at 6.30am from New Grimsby, Tresco.
We hope both crews will enjoy the challenge ahead and we predict sales in Vaseline will rise in the next couple of days!
